Questions
Questions about back pain
Do I need an MRI for back pain?
Not always. Many people with back pain do not need a scan. The doctor will ask for an MRI if your pain goes down the leg, if there is numbness or weakness, or if the pain does not get better with treatment.
Can a slipped disc be treated without surgery?
Often, yes. Many slipped discs settle with medicines, physiotherapy and avoiding heavy lifting for a while. Surgery is considered when the pain does not settle, or when there is weakness or numbness in the leg.
Is sciatica caused by a disc problem?
Usually. Sciatica is most often caused by a slipped disc pressing on a nerve in the lower back. The pain travels down the back of the leg, sometimes to the foot.
Does the doctor do spine surgery?
Yes. Dr. Pragadeeshwaran G has a one-year post doctoral fellowship in orthopaedic spine surgery. He does disc prolapse surgery and scoliosis surgery.
