How we treat it
Getting the bone and joint back to normal
The aim is to help the bone heal in the right place and get you moving again as soon as it is safe.
Check and X-ray
The doctor examines the injury and looks at the X-ray to see the break.
Plaster, splint or brace
Many fractures and sprains heal well when held still for some weeks.
Fracture fixation surgery
When needed, the bone is fixed with plates, screws or nails so it heals straight.
Physiotherapy
After the plaster or surgery, exercises bring back movement and strength.
If there is a major road accident, heavy bleeding, bone coming through the skin, or a head injury, go to the nearest hospital emergency straight away.

Questions
Questions about fractures and injuries
How long does a fracture take to heal?
Most simple fractures take about 6 to 8 weeks to join. Some bones, and older people, take longer. The doctor will check healing with X-rays.
Will I need surgery for my fracture?
Many fractures heal well in a plaster or splint. Surgery is needed when the broken ends have moved out of place, when the break goes into a joint, or when the bone will not stay in position.
I twisted my ankle. Should I see a doctor?
See a doctor if you cannot put weight on the foot, if there is a lot of swelling or bruising, or if the pain is not getting better after a few days. It may be a fracture or a torn ligament.
When can I go back to sport?
It depends on the injury. Physiotherapy helps you build strength and balance again. The doctor will tell you when it is safe to return.
Is physiotherapy available after the plaster comes off?
Yes. Physiotherapy is available at the clinic. Read about physiotherapy.
